Sour Cream Cookies

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I fought long and hard to get this recipe. (Thanks Sue, from over 30 years ago.) It’s an old Czech recipe and there is a bit of ‘art’ in getting them right.

Here’s the deal. They are probably not like any cookie you have tried to make. They are a cake cookie, all soft and almost melty.

The secret is the sour cream. The dough will be VERY soft when you mix and in order to even be able to work with it, you will need to put it in the frig.

Here are the ingredients:
1 cup Butter softened, no substitute
1 cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 cup Sour cream
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1 teaspoon Baking soda
2 1/2 cups Flour
3 tablespoon Flour

Old Czech family recipe from Sue Walker
Yields: 4 Dozen

Ingredients

1 cup Butter softened, no substitute
1 cup Sugar
2 Eggs
1/2 teaspoon Vanilla
1/2 cup Sour cream
1/2 teaspoon Salt
1 teaspoon Baking powder
1 teaspoon Baking soda
2 1/2 cups Flour
3 tablespoon Flour

Let’s start!

Let butter stand until soft, beat until light and creamy then add sugar, eggs, vanilla, and sour cream. Beat until creamy. Mix and sift dry ingredients together, then mix well into dough mixture.

The dough will look like very thick pancake batter. Try your best to get it all sort of glommed up into a ball. Chill in refrigerator.

NOW THIS IS IMPORTANT! Once the dough is chilled, gather about half into a ball and place in the middle of a well floured board. Press down with your hands and begin rolling dough out. You want to roll the dough out THICK. DO not roll thin. The dough should be no less than 1/4 inch thick. This keeps the cookies light and cakey! (Which is the purview of these gems!!)

With some beautiful cookie cutters, dip them each in flour and begin cutting out your cookies.

Bake at 375 degrees on ungreased cookie pans for 8 minutess.

Cool before frosting (Frosting recipe: 1 stick softened butter, a little bit of vanilla, and enough powdered sugar to make the frosting the consistency you like.)

This, as it turns out is the easy and sharing part of these cookies.

I have a hundred memories of my sons and me decorating these. We’ve done cowboy hats and bunnies, Christmas trees and shamrocks.

They are most likely at the very top of the list in my men’s favorites!

Here’s why… just look…

These are excellent stored in frig or freezer.
