Grandma Betty’s Favorite Sugar Cookies

Reading Time: 2 minutes

My sons Grandma on their Daddy’s side, makes these! They are so good that one of my ex sister-in-laws stole them (when she was still my sister-in-law; I am certain the theft had nothing to do with her ex status..) however, they ARE that good.

Simple ingredients:
2 1/2 cups all purpose flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 Cup sugar
1/2 Cup (1 stick) unsalted butter
1/2 Cup solid shortening (Crisco)
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 egg
1 Tbls milk

Have all ingredients at room temperature. Mix flour, baking soda & salt. Cream butter, shortening, sugar and vanilla. All egg and beat until mixture is fluffy. Stir in dry ingredients until mixture is smooth. Blend in milk.

The dough is going to look like this (its kind of thick looking, just make sure its all mixed:

You know that the trick with any baking is DON”T OVER MIX THE FLOUR… this means that you mix it just enough to get it mixed and then STOP!

Now comes the fun part. You can do this with your kids or with your grandparents or with.. well you get the idea, its fun.

Drop by teaspoonfuls onto an ungreased cookie sheet.

Flatten with bottom of water glass which has been dipped in sugar.

I loved this part. I went into my cupboard and found the glass with the coolest bottom. And used it. Actually my sis, by law and by heart, used it.

Actually, she started the process by sprinkling the cookie with some sugar so the glass wouldn’t stick. (After a couple of cookies it will have enough cookie gunk on it that just dipping the glass into the sugar will work just fine!)

See, here’s how she pressed the cookies!

Bake 350 degree oven for about 11 minutes. Cool on wire rack.

See that plain but sweet cookie right there in the middle. Isn’t it pretty? Delicious too!
